Broadway, film and TV actor Herbert Rudley died Sept. 9 in Los Angeles. He was 96.
A native of Philadelphia, his acting career spanned more than 50 years, beginning with his Broadway debut in “Did I Say No” in 1931. He appeared in productions including “The Threepenny Opera,” “Abe Lincoln in Illinois” and the role of MacDuff in the Maurice Evans and Judith Anderson version of “Macbeth.” In 1949 he wrote and directed the Broadway production of “How Long Till Summer.”
In 1940 he recreated his Broadway role in the film version of “Abe Lincoln in Illinois,” and continued onscreen in “The Seventh Cross,” “Brewster’s Millions,” “Rhapsody in Blue,” “A Walk in the Sun,” “Joan of Arc,” “The Young Lions” and “Beloved Infidel.”
On TV he had recurring roles on “Mona McClusky” and “The Californians.” He also appeared on “The Rifleman,” “Hawaiian Eye,” “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “My Favorite Martian” and “Dallas.” From 1967 to 1969 he starred as Eve Arden’s husband in “The Mothers-in-Law.”
