Margot was walking around Toronto -- where she's shooting "Suicide Squad" -- with the gold piece. Thing is ... her beau, aspiring director Tom Ackerley, was sporting similar jewelry last week. Both of them have it on THAT finger.

Robbie and Ackerley hit the one year mark this month... so, it could be perfect timing for him to pop the question.

There's still hope fellas -- they could just be promise rings. Plus, what newlywed or newly engaged chick (especially a smoking hot one in Hollywood) doesn't flash her diamond??
