U-Shape Haircut: How To Make Your Hair Look Thicker

We're about to give you a reason to run to your hair stylist for a hair cut because if you're not in on the U-shape haircut hype yet, then this is about to change the way you cut your hair moving forward.
This haircut is one of the celeb hairdresser's go-to tricks for creating the illusion of fuller and more voluminous hair. So much so that the TikTok girlies cannot get enough of it.
What is the U-shape haircut?
“The U-shape haircut has become super popular for many of clients with hair on the thinner side,” says Mayfair hair stylist Rachel Selt. This cut is a game-changer for those with fine or flat hair, by removing excess weight and layering the ends, which imparts the illusion of added volume, giving your hair a more buoyant appearance.
“The sides of your hair compared to the back section are much thinner, so that U-shape will instantly take that ‘stringy’ look away while giving you a nice, blunt-looking cut.” Rachel adds.
The U-shape haircut also offers a perfect balance between structured and carefree, maintaining the length of the hair while adding movement and body. “As well as volume it also gives lots of hold when using curling irons to style it,” she adds.
And just so we're all clear, here are some examples of what the U-shape haircut looks like in reality. TikTok creator @nothangtw uploaded a video back in 2021 of her U-shape cut with the addition of “wispy bangs” and “face framing pieces," after she was continually asked by followers how to copy her style. The clip has since amassed over 340k likes and counting, having resurfaced since the trendy cut is having a revival.
“I got this hairstyle last week and my confidence shot up like a rocket so thank you so much for making this,” one fan commented, another adding: “I will be asking my hairdresser for this next week.”
@virginia_ongkili also uploaded a video of the on-trend cut, captioned: “The official name for this haircut is Oval U-Shaped Layer. Always the perfect combination with Curtain Bangs haircut.”
To achieve the look, the hair is “split down the middle of the head from the front to the nape of the neck,” Rachel explains, before it is “pulled forward” on each side and vertically cut to take off “fine ends". And, it works with a fringe, longer bangers and in hair where distinctive layers have already been cut.
The style works on shorter hair and curly locks too friends. TikTok creator Marina Ann's video on the cut. She shows how the combination of round layers and the U-shape haircut at the back helps to create even volume and easy-to-style shape.
“Thank you!!! I'm so tired of all my volume being at the ends of my hair, I feel like I'm a lion,” wrote on grateful user, another adding: “I sit there and cut every curl cuz it never ends up good if go somewhere…. I’ll try this.”
What is the best way to maintain a u-cut?
The good news is that thanks to its versatility, the U-cut is relatively easy to maintain and doesn't require constant upkeep. Dependent on how quickly your natural hair grows, you'll likely only need a simple trim every six to eight weeks to remove split ends and maintain even hair growth.
